The Gulf of Kotor (Boka Kotorska) cuts deep into the coast of the southern part of the Yugoslavian Adriatic, creating four spectacular bays surrounded by mountains, the “fjords” of the Mediterranean. The small town of Perast is located where the innermost bays of Risan and Kotor converge. Flanked by two island jewels, Perast focuses on the sea. The interaction between the mainland and the bay, the intrinsic contrast between stone and water, the dialogue between the island and the waves, sometimes in harmony but often in conflict, has given this sea city its powerful uniqueness and strength.
Four centuries of Venetian domination have given the city the typical Venetian architecture, that contributed to making Kotor a UNESCO world heritage site.
The prettiest and best-preserved town in Montenegro, the city of Kotor is characterised by elaborate and tough fortifications. Behind the city walls there is a network of narrow cobbled streets, churches and quirky shops.
Kotor is not a classic town of museums or major sights, it’s simply an appealing place to dip in and out of piazzas, shops and cafes peaking out from old stone buildings, hidden in twisting alleyways.
If you are feeling peckish, grab a sugar-dusted cherry strudel – a delicious local speciality. Don’t miss the traditional cobblers around the corner from St. Nicholas Church and stop by Antiques Stankovic, to learn about Balkan history.
The Bay of Tivat is the largest of four bays forming the Bay of Boka, and Tivat is situated in the centre, at the base of Vrmac. In addition to visiting the beautiful centre of Tivat, it is also interesting to visit the first ever luxury marina on the Adriatic, at Porto Montenegro. Walking in this fabulous marina is a glamorous and relaxing experience, with many facilities, fine dining restaurants and luxury fashion brands. International and authentic traditional Mediterranean cuisine can be tasted in any of the five restaurants in the village, ranging from Italian delicacies, to local and traditional food, and international cuisine to Japanese sushi.
The Old Town in Ulcinj is one of the oldest urban architectural complexes along the Adriatic Sea. It is an ancient town with picturesque narrow and twisting streets, densely packed with two and three storey stone houses decorated in a Renaissance and Baroque style, and a series of valuable edifices from the Ottoman era. The oldest remnants of the walls date back to the Illyrian time. In the 6th century the town built two gates: the lower (Eastern), which can be reached from the sea and the upper (Western), which can be reached from land.
