Italy: Suggested Itineraries

To focus on one region you will ideally consider an itinerary of 7  days. This gives you time to relax on board, at anchor or in port, and explore the villages, towns and exclusive shops, bars and marinas onshore. You can also cruise overnight to ensure you reach some of the furthest points of interest without losing valuable time.  A 14 day itinerary will enable you to visit two adjacent regions, and although you may wish to focus on Italy it is possible to start your yacht charter on the French Riviera (link)  If you wish to spend more than one night in one place then allow extra time to discover everything the region has to offer. Here are some suggestions for the awe inspiring destinations you may want to visit

ITALIAN RIVIERA, PORTOFINO and CINQUE TERRE

The breathtaking rugged cliffs overlooking the sea alternating with the small coastal towns of Liguria, attract yachts to this, the Italian Riviera – one of the most popular destinations in Italy and the Mediterranean. The beautiful Ligurian coast combines opulence and charm!

Portofino, once a fishing village, is now a small but spectacular chic town, and an easy cruise from the port of Genoa. The pastel-coloured houses are mounted precariously on the steep hillside – a spectacular mosaic of colour when seen from the water. This tiny town of cobble-stone streets, framed by hills of silvery, ancient olive groves is now strewn with cafes, boutique shops and gelatarias which adjoin the harbour piazza.

This UNESCO World Heritage site is sure to impress. The five charming coastal villages of Cinque Terre, built into the cliffs, each have their own personality. They have bewitched rulers, writers and celebrities over many years, owing to the warm Mediterranean climate and the union of old and new. The winding and famous walk along this coastal route, links the five towns romantically and is called ‘Via Dell Amore’ (The Way of Love).

With your Italy private yacht charter you can explore the 18 Kilometre coastline and reach the tiny secluded beaches, some of which are only accessible by boat. You can choose to eat onboard or enjoy the charming cafes and restaurants offering typical Ligurian cuisine: fresh fish, shellfish, tomatoes, porcini mushrooms, local pasta and the beloved Genovese pesto. The area is also known for its white wine, with the specialty sweet dessert wine Sciacchetrà.

TUSCAN ARCHIPELAGO

Legend has it that Venus, goddess of beauty, rose from the clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, and seven of the pearls on her necklace fell into the water. This is how the seven islands of the Tuscan Archipelago came to be.  Elba, Giglio, Capraia, Montecristo, Pianosa, Giannutri and Gorgona are perfect for an Italy luxury yacht charter vacation

Each island has a unique personality and they are rich in a variety of natural environments, vegetation, culture, history and art.  Although there are very strict rules concerning the islands, access is allowed to all of them. The largest marine park in Europe, the Tuscan Archipelago National Park obtained protected status in 1986, and remains one of the most beautiful places to sail in the Mediterranean.

Versilia lies in the north-western province of Lucca and is named after the river. Known for its fashionable Riviera resorts, Versilia hosts numerous clubs that are famous for being frequented by celebrities. For more natural and spectacular surroundings you can sail to the beautiful Monte Argentario peninsula, located 35 Kilometres south of Grosseto. It is connected to the mainland by three spits of land which form two lagoons, the Lagunas di Ponente and Levante. The Strada  Panoramica starting in Porto Santo Stefano offers spectacular views of the coast and the Tuscan Archipelago.

NAPLES and THE AMALFI COAST

Many Italy luxury yacht charters begin in Naples, a city that’s chaotic yet charming. Located within the gulf, Naples is a beautiful city, surrounded by breathtaking scenery, volcanoes rising from the deep, and enriched by an artistic and architectural heritage that has allowed it and the Amalfi Coast to become part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Naples is the yacht charter hub of southern Italy and the gateway to Ponza to the North and Ischia, Capri and the Amalfi Coast to the South. Here you can enjoy some of the most spectacular coastlines of the whole Mediterranean.

Naples is truly a city that pulsates with energy in the nightclubs and bars, and the markets by day; you will find many festivals and celebrations too, in the summer months.  It is populated by picturesque and playful local characters, always ready to welcome visitors with a smile and good humour so notwithstanding the delicious recipes offered on board our yachts, it is well worth going ashore to eat authentic pizza and tasty Neapolitan dishes. With a thriving art scene, impressive architecture and many museums it is a significant centre of culture with Pompeii not far away and well worth visiting.

An Italy yacht holiday must incorporate the natural paradise of the Amalfi Coast, south of Naples with its 50 Kilometre of coastline stretching between the Gulfs of Naples and Salerno. The thirteen main towns and villages are Amalfi, Atrani, Cetara, Conca dei Marini, Furore, Maiori, Minori, Positano, Praiano, Ravello, Scala, Tramonti, Vietri sul Mare and offer a magnificent display of Italian engineering and architecture with terraced houses suspended on the steep cliffs rising from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The beaches are beautiful and a yacht charter trip will allow you to admire the wonders of nature directly from the sea and discover verdant forests and coastal hideaways, often unreachable from the mainland.

The Amalfi Coast is an extremely popular destination for superyachts as it hosts luxurious resorts, boutique shopping and fine dining. Yet the locals have held fast to their traditional lifestyles and pastel terraced houses, so the opulence of this region has simply grown around them leading to a pleasing contrast of old and new. Popular destinations are the towns of Sorrento and Positano.  Sorrento boasts a stunning harbour best approached by sea, with vertiginous and colourful terraces as its dramatic backdrop. Positano sits high above sea level, with a rocky beach at its feet and steep, winding streets taking you to the amazing views at its highest point.

The Bay of Naples is filled with beautiful islands. Cruise out to the large island of Ischia to explore the coastline riddled with grottos, then step ashore to visit a vineyard. Ischia is an enchanting island with copious diversity of nature, art and culture. A volcanic island, it is known for its mineral-rich thermal waters and springs which gush at the Maronti beach, to the south of the island. To the east, Roman remains can be found on the seabed of the Cartaromana beach, an ideal location to anchor your private yacht to enjoy diving and snorkeling. The beach overlooks the mediaeval Aragonese Castle, which is connected to Ischia by a stone bridge.

Capri in the Gulf of Naples, is famous for its rugged terrain, cove abundant coastline and exclusive shopping, ranging from haute couture and limoncello to handmade leather sandals. One of the most famous natural sites is the Grotta Azzurra, a rocky cavern where the sea water is tinged electric blue owing to an underground cave that filters the sunlight.

SARDINIA

With its luxury residences, sparkling nightlife, select boutiques and elegant restaurants an exclusive Italy Yacht Charter holiday in Sardinia offers much to entertain and many places to relax. Glamorous Porto Cervo is the main centre of the region and during September true yachting aficionados congregate to watch the annual regatta. The opulence and limited road access to the Costa Smeralda have made the area especially popular for luxury yacht charters.

The fame of the Costa Smeralda or Emerald Coast  is owed to its places of outstanding natural value, such as Cala di Volpe, an exclusive natural harbour where some scenes of the James Bond film ‘ The Spy Who Loved Me ’ were filmed. Sardinia’s stunning coastline offers intense turquoise sparkling, clear waters teeming with fish; and white sands disappearing into oceans of blue. Much of the Sardinian coastline is a dedicated nature reserve, with miles of beaches and grottos accessible only by boat. La Maddalena National Park, is a marine reserve dotted with islands, beaches and plenty of secluded anchorages for day trips and overnight stays.

In the emerald sea of Sardinia there is always enough wind for lovers of sailing, kite and windsurfing. When the Mistral sweeps the Mediterranean from the West, the stunning coasts are a must for surfers, with fast waves and tubes that can reach four metres in Capo Mannu. From Buggerru to Funtanamare the west coast is paradise for the most experienced surfers, who fearlessly face the power of the sea.

From chic shopping to secluded coves, mountain trails, gorgeous coastal villages and rugged mountain scenery, Sardinia offers such diversity of entertainment. If you would like to experience all this with the freedom that a luxury yacht charter offers, then this is the right destination.

SICILY, EGADI and AEOLIAN ISLANDS

Sicily is the largest Mediterranean island with endless options for your Italy yacht charter vacation. It is an ancient land boasting curious archaeological sites, popular beaches, and many archipelagos and islets. The impressive faces of Mount Etna can be seen from the sea, and this is undoubtedly the most impressive way to meet Europe’s largest active volcano. Sicily offers an all-year-round appeal, thanks to a perfect mix of mild climate, history, delicious Mediterranean cuisine, vibrant nightlife and a warm atmosphere

Sicily’s privileged position has resulted in a colourful history of invasion and conquests throughout the ages. Evidence of the Greeks, Romans, and Arabs can all be found amongst the Italian culture, from its food to its architecture, its art to its music. The cuisine of Sicily is multi-faceted as it has developed from a small number of indigenous ingredients being infused with the exotic flavours of its past settlers.

An Italy luxury yacht charter holiday in Sicily is an altogether more rustic experience with the absence of crowds, leaving the views unobstructed. After days spent exploring the art and architecture for which Sicily is famous, your charter yacht’s knowledgeable crew will direct you to the best coffee and cannolo (the local pastry delicacy) and the best places to enjoy the local Muscat and Marsala wines, produced exclusively on the island.

You’ll be amazed by the crystal clear waters and varied flora and fauna of the three islands and islets of the Egadi Archipelago to the west of Sicily. Favignana is the largest and best equipped island, Marettimo known for its white low houses and blue doors, and Levanzo, which has only 200 residents is ideal for those wanting peace and relaxation. The Archipelago also features the islet of Formica and the rock of Maraone. A popular destination for lovers of snorkeling, diving and sailing you can swim in the colourful clear waters of a sea full of life or admire the unadulterated cliffs, beaches and coves.

There are also cultural attractions: from the old Florio factory, the largest marine museum in Europe, to the Grotta del Genovese, the most important complex of wall paintings in Italy, dating back to the Paleolithic-Neolithic eras. For those who love just the slightest taste of the mountains, Marettimo offers trekking trails, while for the adventurous in Favignana it is possible to try a sport fishing charter, one of the very few in Italy. There are also numerous excursions in the Egadi Islands suitable for everyone for example a visit to the Hypogean gardens or the ascent by donkey to the top of Mount Santa Caterina. Or you can decide to stay and relax on board your charter yacht and enjoy the Egadi archipelago from the deck.

Formed by volcanic activity, the Aeolian Islands are seven small inhabited islands surrounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north of Sicily: Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli, Filicudi, Alicudi, Panarea and Basiluzzo. The islands owe their name to Aeolus, God of winds and are full of surprises and contrasts. The largest and most touristic island is Lipari but travellers are also attracted to hike up to the craters of Vulcano and Stromboli, the active volcanoes of the archipelago, whose eruptions over the years have modified the islands size and appearance. Stromboli offers the most exhilarating experience with its almost constant volcanic activity, issuing forth molten lava and smoke, and is also popular for those with a passion for fashion, being home to Dolce and Gabbana.

Approaching with your private charter yacht you will be overwhelmed by the beauty of the coastline, landscape and the temptation to explore. After sunset, you can enjoy the starry sky, owing to the municipality’s decision to avoid installing road lights. Breathtakingly beautiful and diverse in nature, the seven islands and many uninhabited islets of the Aeolian archipelago were proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000. The amalgamation of crystal waters, rocky coastlines, smouldering craters and black-sand beaches makes these islands unique and ideal for island hopping, diving and snorkeling.

The interior of the islands are also fascinating, with bizarre rock formations, dense vegetation in Salina, prehistoric villages in Lipari, Panarea and Filicudi and marine sourced archaeological treasures secured in the Archaeological Museum of Lipari.

PUGLIA

Also known as Apulia, Puglia forms the heel of Italy in the South, and is the least mountainous region of Italy earning its name ‘Italy’s granary‘ owing to its emphasis on grain farming. Due to its superb Mediterranean climate and winds from the Africa, Puglia is a perfect destination for an Italy Yacht charter vacation, all year round. You can count on sunny weather with water temperatures reaching about 20 °C, perfect for swimming. Even with the onset of Autumn temperatures remain high only dropping below 20°C at the end of October and a mild 10-12°C in the winter months. When the north-easterly winds blow, the sea becomes completely flat alongside the Ionian coastline providing perfect conditions for sailing.

Puglia has a long and varied coastline of more than 800 Kilometres, the longest after the islands of Sardinia and Sicily. At the easternmost point, Capo d’Otranto the sea changes from the Adriatic to the Ionian.

The beautiful National Park of Gargano with its rocky coast, offers a fascinating variety of scenery ranging from the salt mines of Santa Margherita di Savoia to the canyons of Castellaneta and the protected oasis of the Alimini lakes.  The area has many magical grottoes which must be seen to be believed, for example the beautiful Castellana cave. Apart from spectacular cliffs and caves, the varied coastline offers white sand beaches and the Gulf of Taranto is surrounded by the most verdant pine forests. For your Italy luxury yacht charter you may choose to visit some of the beautiful islands of Puglia, for example the marine protected area around Tremiti or Sant’ Andrea with its impressive Aragonese Castle.

This is a region rich in history and culture with many castles and architectural masterpieces, symbolising the power of those that dominated the territory. With a history dating back over 250,000 years, there is much to discover at the Egnazia Archaelogical Park for those interested in ancient history.

VENICE

Being afloat on an Italy charter yacht vacation is a fantastic way to experience the classic Mediterranean city of Venice and its lagoon; as you approach, the view from the water is breathtaking. It is arguably the most romantic and artistic city in the world, inspiring poets and novelists, with its intricate web of canals, gondoliers, glorious renaissance architecture and narrow cobbled streets. Venice is an essential stop on any Adriatic Italy yacht charter holiday.

Many of the lagoons and canals of Venice can be explored by tender or water taxi, allowing you to visit historic hotels accessible only by water, dine on superb seafood at Michelin-starred restaurants then watch the moonlit canals, with a chilled glass of Prosecco. If you cruise down the Grand Canal you will be able to see the Ca’ Foscari, Palazzo Grassi, Guggenheim Museum and the Accademia Bridge. Take some time to gaze at the stunning Gothic architecture, the most famous Doge’s Palace and Ca’ d’Oro.

Venice has much to offer with festivals celebrating music, art and religious events throughout the seasons; the annual film festival is held in February, and the Redentore festival in July is famous for its impressive fireworks. In the evening, you can enjoy a performance at the Teatro la Fenice and as Venice is home to the Carpaccio beef dish, why not head on to Harry’s Bar where it was invented, to sample it along with the local Bellini cocktail.

Venice is not famous for beaches, however with a private yacht you can visit the soft sands and shallow water of Albarella island, or explore the fascinating lagoon. Alternatively sail on to the Croatian islands, which are within reach owing to Venice’s location at the top of the Adriatic Sea.

CORSICA

Corsica is a mountainous island which boasts fashionable cities along the coast and dense forests with rocky mountains inland. Almost half of the island is parkland including hiking trails, and its beautiful beaches vary from the popular to the remote. This fourth-largest island in the Mediterranean lies west of the Italian peninsula and immediately north of the Italian island of Sardinia. There are delightful  festivals, history and culture to discover in Corsica – Napoleon’s birthplace, and while Corsica has been part of France since 1768, it still retains a strong Italian cultural heritage

Italy Yacht Charter - FAQ

If you have decided Italy is your next vacation destination, make it a memorable one with a yacht charter.

Contact one of our charter experts to discuss your vacation plans, destinations, type of yacht, budget, and the size of your group. We will recommend the best charter solutions.

If you prefer to choose a vessel on your own, you can do so by using our website proposals, however our office is happy to advise by phone or email and prepare an offer for you based on your preferences.

Once you have selected your yacht, the next step is to read the agreement we will send you, then sign and return it to us. Finally, we will send you the Preference Form, for you to fill out and email to us, so that we can ensure everything is ready for your arrival.

As stated in the charter agreement, you must pay a deposit of 50% of the total fee to secure your charter. The remaining 50%, plus taxes and any additionally agreed charges, should then be paid one month prior to arrival.

The vessel is considered booked as soon as the first instalment of 50% of the total price is paid, or the whole charter fee for bookings made within 30 days before the departure. Payment must be made by bank transfer.

Your charter agreement outlines rules and regulations for cancelling your charter. If your charter is cancelled due to force majeure, we will refund the entire amount paid or, if the parties mutually agree, the Charter Period can be postponed to a mutually agreed time. Should you wish to cancel your charter for any other reason, we will deduct cancellation charges as per your agreement. We recommend you purchase travel insurance to protect you from any cancellation charges and read the Charter contract for the detailed cancellation process,or ask our staff.

If you wish to change the charter terms or cancel the reservation, this must be notified in writing (via e-mail, fax or registered post.)

The best period to charter a yacht in Italy is between June and September.

In June the days are longer and the sun sets very late allowing longer days to enjoy summer activities, but the water is not at its warmest. August is a very warm period, especially in southern Italy for example in Sicily and the Aeolian and Egadian Islands.

September is a fantastic period to enjoy a yacht charter in Italy when places are less crowded than July and August. The sea is warm and the temperature is still acceptable for an enjoyable yacht charter holiday, although the sunset is earlier.

October is also typical for an Italy yacht charter, especially in Sicily and along the Amalfi Coast where the weather is still good with high temperatures.

At West Coast International we have a wide range of vessels offering Yacht Charters in Italy. We offer motor yachts, sailing yachts, motor and sailing catamarans, mega yachts, and superyachts. The choice of vessel will depend on your personal requirements, group size, ages, interests, places you want to visit, budget and any unique needs. Our charter specialists are ready and available to discuss your Italian itinerary and specific requirements to ensure you charter the most suitable vessel for you.

While the choice of the vessel depends entirely on your wishes and preferences, this may help you decide:

Superyachts fully crewed:

Sailing yachts – excellent for both family and an active vacation

Catamarans – very stable and comfortable, ensure high speed sailing

Motor yachts – for speed cruising enthusiasts

and

Gulets – two masted wooden sailing boats, which use both the power of the engine and sails

Luxury mega yachts – Fully crewed luxury yachts that can travel internationally

You can bring children of any age on your private charter, there is no age limit. They should be closely monitored by adults from the charter party.

We do not provide childcare services onboard our charter. Children must wear life vests when partaking in water activities and are advised to wear life vests at all times.

If you are bringing a baby, it is advisable to bring baby food items as these are often difficult to find in the marina supermarkets and for our crew to source.

Children are best placed in the front cabins and the cockpit is the safest place to play. Smaller yacht charter clients can also request in advance a safety net to be placed along the sides of the boat.

You may consider choosing shorter itineraries and visiting marinas more frequently in order to provide safer berthing and comfort for the children.
