Art in Sicily, YAG – Yacht Art Gallery opens in Palermo
Imagine an art gallery on display on splendid boats as they cruise the Mediterranean an entire summer, brushing the most beautiful ports and coasting along unique beaches. Picture works of art that move between the countries where culture and civilization were born, uniting the northern and southern hemispheres, the East and the West.
This is exactly what we are describing when we talk about YAG, the Yacht Art Gallery: a contemporary art exhibition set up for months, on beautiful boats. YAG is an unprecedented, nomadic and itinerant exhibition.
“For this first edition of YAG entitled ‘Island Tales’ we decided to focus on Sicily, the island at the centre of the Mare Nostrum, where all the beauty and contradictions of this geographical and mental region, meet and mix. So it is here that the works on display are a selection of some of today’s greatest Sicilian artists. They are artists of different generations and who use the most varied artistic languages. Not all of them were born in Sicily, which demonstrates how the island is still an ideal international centre for experimental art…..Sicily continues to be even today, an influential creative force. Many artists are Sicilian by birth and grow up here, and it is where many decide to move to from abroad as well, being invariably wooed by its beauty and adopted by its community. It is a varied artistic scene, whose artists range across the many languages of creativity. Not only the main areas of the island are protagonists: the artistic scene is alive, from Palermo to Catania, from Modica to Scicli to the many islets which in the summer months become laboratories of international experimentation and creativity”.
The boats in turn become an exhibition, inside which medium and smaller paintings and sculptures are set up in the communal areas and cabins; they transform into a traveling art gallery, capable of becoming wind and current, for an entire summer around the Mediterranean. The dream for its second edition in 2024, is of arriving in Venice during the Biennale of contemporary art.
The inauguration of YAG – Yacht Art Gallery, an event curated by Antonio Grulli, took place on May 5th in Marina Villa Igiea, Piazza Acquasanta, in Palermo, hosted by the yachts of West Coast International. The artists: Francesco Balsamo, Alessandro Bazan, Francesco De Grandi, Andrea Di Marco, Fulvio Di Piazza, Piero Guccione, Francesco Lauretta, Elisabetta Marino, Ignazio Mortellaro, Francesca Polizzi and Lola Schnabel.
