The history of yacht chartering navigation through time: the open sea has captivated the hearts and imaginations of adventurers and enthusiasts over the centuries.  Now yacht chartering allows you to embrace that spirit of adventure and the call of the ocean in style. The history of yacht chartering reflects not only the evolution of maritime travel but also the enduring human desire to set sail to explore coasts, islands, seas and oceans.

Yacht Chartering Roots

The roots of yacht chartering can be traced back many centuries. Wealthy individuals and monarchs would finance the construction of vessels for both leisure and exploration. The Age of Discovery in the 15th and 16th centuries led such famous explorers as Columbus to set forth on ocean voyages with their own chartered vessels.

By the 17th Century yacht clubs had begun to emerge in Europe, for example the Water Club of the Harbour of Cork in Ireland, which was founded in 1720.  Affluent sailors would participate in regattas and races with their privately owned yachts; in this period ownership was more common than chartering.

Chartering a yacht for recreational purposes became prevalent in the late 19th century, in part due to the industrial revolution. The emerging middle class with their newfound wealth started an interest in maritime recreation which in turn led to the formation of the first charter companies. With the development of steam-powered vessels and new shipbuilding technologies, yacht chartering became increasingly accessible.

The ‘Roaring Twenties’ were a significant turning point in the history of yacht chartering owing to the opulent lifestyle, so it became synonymous with a rich and glamorous world. Famous figures like Aristotle Onassis and Ernest Hemingway  were among those who popularized the trend, boasting their own luxurious, tailor-made charter yachts.

As the global economy improved in the wake of World War II, travel became more accessible once again. The appeal of escaping to exotic destinations on a luxurious vessel led to charter companies expanding their fleets, and chartering evolved from being an elite activity to one more accessible to a broader range of adventurers.
