On 24th March 2015, Baring Global Resources was added to The Adviser Centre as a Recommended fund.
Baring Global Resources is managed by Duncan Goodwin, Head of Global Resources, who joined Baring Asset Management in January 2014. He is supported by the group’s dedicated global resources team and the broader investment platform at Barings. Mr Goodwin has a great deal of experience in managing global resource mandates, having previously been lead manager on the Martin Currie Global Resources fund.
The team acknowledges the volatility of the asset class and to address this, their process has been developed to offer investors exposure to a broader range of resource-related companies, in a way that typically generates less volatility than traditional resources funds. Therefore, their investment universe incorporates traditional energy and base and precious metal companies, alongside downstream services, chemicals and transporters. This approach means that the fund is typically less sensitive to falling markets compared to more specialised resources funds, but the corollary of this is that the fund may not fully participate in strongly rising commodity markets when energy and or mining, both large parts of the fund’s index, outperform.
We believe that the fund has appeal for investors who are seeking to make a long-term allocation to the broader resources suite, particularly those who do not have the tolerance for the high volatility of purer natural resources offerings.
As a reminder, the fund resides in the IA Specialist sector.
