The most exhilarating spectator sport – an F1 Grand Prix in Monaco.
If you’ve never experienced an F1 motor race – some would say you’ve not lived! The excitement, the drama and the noise have no equal among spectator sports, and the Monaco circuit with its bends, hills and tunnels is unlike any other track in the world.
For an uninterrupted view of the circuit, many of the rich and famous take to the harbour on their charter or private yachts, superyachts and mega yachts, rather than rely on the crowded grandstands on land. This provides the opportunity not only to see a significant part of the circuit, but also to host friends and families for these very special events, a safe distance away from the masses.
Monaco is the second smallest and the most densely populated country in the world, located on the French Riviera and towering on a rock high above the city is the ruling Grimaldi’s castle. The Grimaldi’s have been in power almost 800 years and they transformed Monaco into a principality in 1338.
Alexandre Noghes was a wealthy cigarette manufacturer who lived in Monaco, a close friend of the Royal Family, in 1911 he organised the very first Monaco Rally. Eighteen years later his son, Anthony came up with the idea to run a Grand Prix through the streets of Monte Carlo. The layout he proposed is the same one used today, testament to the popularity with motor racing fans whether viewing the circuit from land or on a yacht in the harbour.
Anthony and the Automobile Club de Monaco organised the first race in 1929, as part of the European Championship, won by William Grover-Williams driving a Bugatti. Then in 1950 the race was included in the Formula One World Championship for the first time.
Monaco is the longest race in terms of time and if it is slowed by wet weather will go to the full two hours. Overtaking is extremely hazardous owing to the narrow roads and lack of space so drivers have to take risks not seen on other circuits.
Suffice to say that being an observer of the Monaco Grand Prix is an experience never forgotten, and to be able to enjoy it from the deck of a private superyacht in the company of family and friends is a privilege afforded to only a few.
